Marvin Sapp partners with Jay Z's Roc Nation-gospel fans are not happy

While the historic partnership marks the label’s first-ever full-length gospel release, a vocal segment of Christian social media is already up in arms, accusing the pastor of stepping out of line. But are they wildly overreacting? Let’s talk about it.

“More than thirty years into my journey as an artist, every partnership I enter must be rooted in purpose, shared vision and mutual respect,” Sapp told Billboard about the news, adding that while Roc Nation Distribution is an undeniable force in the music industry, “what truly stood out was the openness and collaborative spirit of their leadership team. I’m honored to partner with them and look forward to creating something impactful together as I step into this next chapter of my career.”

But while Sapp may be excited at this new venture, some of the church folks and fans are feeling the exact opposite. In fact, they’ve got a whole lot to say about it and didn’t hesitate to let their thoughts off on social media.

“Sir…Unless you’re leading Jay-Z to Jesus, you’re in a Hell of a lot of trouble,” wrote one user in part on Instagram.

“Teaming up with the man that said ‘Jesus can’t save you, life begins when the church ends?’ Yikes,” said another.

One other user questioned: “Roc Nation and gospel? Trying to find how those two correlate in any way.”

Added another: “Pastor should check his holy ghost again on this one…not sure this was a good move.”

Over on X/Twitter, one user said, “Ain’t no way a gospel artist should be signing to Roc Nation. This [is] what I mean by false people in the Church misguiding the Church as Jesus warned.”

Another wrote curtly: “Those Who Preach GOD NEED God.”

And while believers may be in their feelings about this, it should be stated that this is far from the first time gospel and hip-hop have collaborated. Kirk Franklin, one of the genre’s biggest artists, famously brought Salt from Salt-N-Pepa into the gospel world when he released his 1997 hit, “Stomp.” Since then, he’s done songs with rappers like Lil Baby, Will Smith, T.I., and most recently, GloRilla for her 2024 song, “Rain Down on Me.”
